Title: Topolino and environmental education. The ecological commitment of the comic between fiction and non-fiction
Abstract: Comics are a literary form that demonstrate a great artistic and pedagogical potential. Through its immediacy and through the cooperation of texts and images, comics often present complex issues in a direct, simple way. The present paper aims to highlight the educational potential of this literary form as it addresses ecological topics such as eco-literacy and sensibilization to natural forms. Among those comics that build on the research field of ecocriticism, this study specifically analyses Italian comic Topolino, a long-lasting publication that has been addressing different generations of Italian readers. After underlining the historical commitment of the comic in dealing with ecological issues right from its early publications, the paper outlines three levels where ecological subjects are developed: narrative works of fiction (stories, comic strips and cartoons, that will be explored in their most recurrent and meaningful themes); non-fictional works (columns, in-depth analysis and gadgets); works between fiction and non-fiction (Junior Woodchucks Guidebook). The study wants to show Topolino's wide and concrete commitment to a 'mission' of ecological awareness.

Abstract: Il fumetto è una forma letteraria dal grande potenziale artistico ed educativo. Grazie alla sua immediatezza, attraverso i fumetti è possibile presentare questioni complesse in modo diretto, semplice, usufruendo della cooperazione tra l'apparato testuale e quello iconografico. Il presente articolo vuole sottolineare il potenziale educativo di questo genere letterario nell'affrontare la questione della sensibilizzazione ambientale e l'alfabetizzazione ecologica. Tra i fumetti che si collocano nel filone dell'ecocritica, lo studio si sofferma nello specifico sul fumetto italiano Topolino, pubblicazione decennale che ha accompagnato e accompagna diverse generazioni di lettori italiani. Dopo aver evidenziato l'impegno storico del fumetto nel trattare questioni ambientale già dal suo esordio, la ricerca traccia tre piani su cui la questione ambientale si sviluppa, ovvero nelle opere narrative di fiction (episodi, strisce e vignette, di cui verranno tracciati alcuni filoni tematici ricorrenti e significativi), nelle opere di non-fiction (rubriche didattiche, approfondimenti, gadget a tema) e nelle opere che si collocano a cavallo tra fiction e non-fiction (il Manuale delle Giovani Marmotte). Lo studio intende quindi dimostrare l'impegno concreto ed eterogeneo del fumetto nell'affrontare una 'missione' di sensibilizzazione ecologica lungo un ampio lasso di tempo.
